Keys to Success for online students
Transcript
Let's talk about some keys to success as an online student. It's really quite simple. Taking ownership of your learning is the biggest key to success.
So what does that look like? Well, it means staying up to date and on pace with your assigned work, carefully completing and understanding your assignments, and communicating with your teacher.
On the cards on your home page, you'll see a pacing section for any courses that have target dates.
You'll see how many activities you've completed for the course so far, and whether you're on track to complete all of the course activities by the end date. If you are on or ahead of pace, you'll see a green person standing or running forward. If you're behind, the person will be orange or red and
running backward. Try to stay green and on pace.
Remember, this will tell you if you've completed the right number of activities to be on pace, but not how well you're doing. You could be zooming through the course but still not doing well. Or you could be doing well but falling behind schedule.
Keep an eye on your grade in the middle of each card next to the ribbon icon. There are a few different grades you might see depending on what your teacher is using to measure your progress. The Current Grade tells you how you have been performing on the work you have completed and have been scored for so far. The Course Grade tells you what your final grade would be if you did not complete anymore work for the course. The On Target Grade shows you how you are doing in the course based on any work you have completed and has been scored so far. But if you haven't completed an activity and it is past the target date, you will get a 0 for that activity in the On Target Grade. You can still complete the activity after the target date and get credit for it. If you have a low On Target Grade but a high Current Grade, it means you are likely understanding the material, but you might need a little help with your
time management to make sure you are completing activities on time. You can improve your On Target Grade by finishing activities that are past their target date. If you want to easily see which activities are past their target date, you can use the Past Target filter.
To do well in a course, review each tutorial and your tutorial notes before taking the mastery test and review your work from the entire unit before taking a posttest.
Finally, always maintain good two way communication with your teacher. Make sure to check with your teacher on the best way to communicate with them. One option is to exchange messages with your teacher
from the message center. Your inbox will show any messages from your teacher as well as class wide announcements and alerts letting you know when your teacher has graded one of your activities. Messages have an envelope icon, alerts have a bell, and announcements have a megaphone.
At the bottom of your home page is the Help Center. Useful information is available there 24/7. One of the most important resources in the Help Center is our short Courses Guide for you and your parents or guardians. Please read it for the critical information you need to be successful in your course.
So remember, stay on pace, complete and understand your assignments and communicate with your teacher.
Success. It's in your hands. You got this.
